Features BMW 2002tii
This car has been sold, but please enquire about other similar cars we have in the pipeline.
We've been commissioned to restore this tii for the new owner, so regular updates and photos will appear here as work progresses to bring yet another of these wonderful cars back into regular use.
The start of another 2002tii full restoration. We had to coax this one into the daylight. Started its hibernation in 1985, after 30 years snug and dry it's now being born again as a Group 1 fast road car, nice round rear light model with basket weave vinyl. Ready for the strip down and then off to the soda blasters, to see what we have left to work with.
Soda blasted bodyshell back in the workshop with evidence of previous patching up uncovered. Now to begin the painstaking process of cutting out and replacing panels to give us a rust free bodyshell. Using a rotisserie makes life a lot easier. Engine stripped ready for the rebuild, remarkably showing no wear on the crankshaft or cylinder bores at 125,000 miles!
URT616M progressing nicely, we are repairing and saving the original front panel as the Tiis were built with no snorkel. The new replacement front panels are only available with the carburettor snorkel, sad I know but the purist will understand.
Engine is totally stripped and hot acid washed to remove any traces of old oil, new core plugs all round as the build up starts, aiming for a tractable and torquey 150 BHP.
The bodyshell goes off to the paint shop while we concentrate on getting the correct parts and trim ready for re-assembly.
The body is first primed, then returned to its original Malaga Red. The underside is better than new with modern hi-tech anti-stone chip protection finished off with a coat Malaga Red rather than black underseal.
Uprated 150 bhp engine now reassembled and the powder coated suspension with new Bilsteins goes in. Just look at that superb finish.
Front & rear suspension assembled with poly bushes throughout, drive shafts and rear arms & axle complete, complex remote twin servos & dual circuit brake lines fitted through to master cylinder & front to rear brakes, system filled and checked for leaks. Instrument binnacle stripped cleaned & usual circuit board repair completed. Uprated 150 bhp engine fitted along with gearbox and complete stainless steel performance exhaust system including 4-2-1 extractor manifold.
Finishing touches applied and it's off to the BMW National Festival at Gaydon to celebrate 50 years of the 02 Series.
